Our school ethos is at the heart of all we do: we want our children to be motivated to learn, to persevere and to recognise their own successes in a variety of contexts (M+P=S). Through the teaching of PSHE, our children will be given the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that they need to effectively navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. They will become lifelong learners with the confidence and ability to develop their skills and understanding when having new experiences, meeting new challenges and finding themselves in unfamiliar situations. As a school, we believe that children are all individuals and therefore, we aim to encourage mutual respect, responsibility and foster self-esteem in a happy and caring atmosphere. We aim to ensure all children are supported in becoming confident individuals and active members of society.
Our Methley Magic Five: motivation. perseverance, respect, communication and collaboration.
Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE) enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of society. It supports pupils in understanding how they are developing both personally and socially, and tackles many moral, social and cultural issues that affect children growing up, both in and out of the area they live. We offer a nurturing learning environment in which each child is encouraged to develop their full potential and where their achievements and successes are celebrated and rewarded.
In PSHE, we encourage positive self-talk during class discussions and promote mindfulness and reflection when facing challenges. We praise effort and learning processes; we put failures and mistakes into a growth perspective, understanding that FAIL = First Attempt In Learning; and we give our pupils problems to solve, which need effective discussion.
Children understand their rights and responsibilities as well as what it means to be a part of a diverse society. Through using ‘You, Me, PSHE’, our children acquire knowledge, understanding and the skills they need to manage their lives now and in their futures. It develops the qualities and attributes children need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society and the global community.
Our PSHE programme is delivered using the Kapow scheme of work. We offer a preventative curriculum meaning we provide an environment where difference is celebrated and children are taught to be upstanders against unkind behaviour. Our PSHE programme enables learners to;
The children are at the heart of everything we do therefore, it is our top priority that we create a safe and nurturing environment to have these important conversations and discussions about understanding the world around us. We place great emphasis on active learning by encouraging the children to take part in discussions, investigations and problem-solving activities. Our children are enabled to take part in a range of practical activities that promote active citizenship, for example; charity fundraising (NSPCC, Breast Cancer Awareness and Red Nose Day), the planning of special events such as a special assembly or involvement in an activity to help other individuals or groups less fortunate than themselves (harvest collections for local food banks). We also give children the opportunity to take ownership and responsibility by electing value ambassadors.
Classes are organised to enable participation in discussions to resolve conflicts and class rules are discussed and agreed by all involved. We are a Restorative Practice school and children are offered conflict resolution in the form of a restorative circle if there is a situation which requires this.
Personal, Social and Health Education, Sex Education and Drug Education are part of a whole school approach. There is dedicated time each week (usually 1 hour per week) for PSHE lessons across school. Our Kapow scheme allows children to progress through school gradually, learning topics that are age appropriate to their development. In addition to quality first teaching in PSHE, links to ethos statements are explored in whole school assemblies, which are used as part of the provision for high quality PSHE. There are also meaningful opportunities for cross-curricular learning, in particular with Computing for online safety and Science for growing, nutrition, teeth, diet and lifestyle. The messages provided by our quality first teaching and through our PSHE scheme transmit consistent messages throughout the age ranges including how and where to access help. The role of parents and carers is recognised as a key part in making our school a safe, nurturing and happy place for all children.
